Matthew is a PhD student researching Data Compression via Statistical Models. He is supervised by Dr Stefano Castruccio.
Matthew’s project is to investigate the use of statistical models to describe the essential Information in a climate model ensemble and therefore to compress the entire ensemble into a vector of parameter point-estimates. Given sufficient statistical model validation the model can be used to conduct conditional simulations, allowing the investigation of questions in geoscience to be explored with substantially reduced storage requirements.
